Co-op Cinema

Rae–Nang is a new model for a public, volunteer-led cinema cooperative in Bangkok, where it is collectively run and shared by volunteer curators. Through repurposing a public, vacant space as a community cinema, while promoting a horizontal, open-ended curatorial model, we offer emerging curators a platform to create film programmes and events in a non-commercial screening space. Built around mobility, accessibility, and autonomy, Rae–Nang encourages curatorial freedom and meaningful community engagement.
Rae–Nang draws inspiration from Atlas Cinema in London, which operated from a renovated railway arch in South London. Atlas Cinema offered pay-what-you-can screenings while providing equipment, infrastructure, and support for anyone interested in programming film events, regardless of prior experience. It has since supported nearly 200 screenings by 110+ individuals and collectives, many of whom work with audiences and curators often excluded from traditional cinema spaces.

In Bangkok, Rae–Nang is collaborating with Nang Loeng Community Lab to establish a community cinema at the Satri Julanak School. Between June to August 2026, Rae–Nang will host a series of online talks and in-person workshops, while working with six selected participants to develop new film programmes. For the next six months, the cooperative cinema will operate as a shared space for emerging curators and local audiences through a pay-as-you-can model and a non-hierarchical, non-commercial approach.
